Sticking very close to home today with local rapscallions Armstrong, who hail from Glasgow. A very young band in all respects (well, from my ageing perspective), they’ve been gigging since March this year and gained themselves a decent following.
Stylewise, they’re alternative rock and they describe themselves as “Shirley Manson fronting We Are Scientists” but they definitely don’t sound Garbage. Geddit? Sorry.
Listening to their debut single “Thursday Night Club”, it’s obvious where singer Nicole Mason (maybe she should change her surname to Manson… it’s only one letter) comes from as her accent pours through, backed by the twin guitars of David Lennon and Stuart Hay. Rhythm is laid down by bassist Ian Cruise and Brian Callander on drums. The song comes from their self-titles debut EP which is already available (grab it on Amazon or iTunes).
Armstrong are a band who have that kind of sound that’s very easy on the ears, making superb background music which sneakily lifts your spirits without you noticing. Pay attention to it and you get a different experience with all the beat changes, flowing riffs and intelligent lyrics.
As ever, links are below including a sample and you can hear the rest of the EP on Soundcloud. Check ’em out and see if you can catch them performing on stage. It seems to be what they live for!
