Band of the Day: Beautiful Expectations

Beautiful Expectations - Living Like An AnimalWhat do you get if you combine four 16-year-old girls, some instruments and a decent spread of musical influences? Well, in this case the result is Beautiful Expectations, based in Greenock (about 20 miles or so west of Glasgow, give or take).

For a young band, they’ve generated some impressive press reports and played a couple of well-known venues in the region – including the rather cool King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut. They bill themselves as alternative rock and that’s a fair pigeon-hole in my opinion, allowing them to spread their musical wings around a bit.

They’ve even gone as far as releasing their debut EP, Living Like an Animal, which you can grab through the usual digital channels – iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Deezer, Spotify… – and sample on SoundCloud/Youtube.

The tracks are nicely varied. “Tayle” is fast-paced and anthemic, immediately bringing to mind the likes of Skunk Anansie. “Predators” is a little slower, marginally grungy, and features some great harmonised vocals. Personally, I prefer the more ridiculously-named “Chicken Pie” for its changing rhythms and bass-led bounciness.

Give them a listen and keep an eye out for them playing near you – and hopefully as time goes on that statement will start to apply to those of you further afield than Glasgow! At the moment, the girls are polishing off some recently-recorded new material but I’m sure they’ll be back in force soon.
