Dö got in touch with me recently to let me know about the EP they released at the start of the year. It’s called simply “EP 2014” (actually, it’s untitled but you have to call it something) and it’s three tracks of doom/stoner metal.
The band are from Helsinki and the EP is the first release from this slightly off-kilter three-piece. To name them as billed in their own publicity, we have:
- Big Dog – General Development Officer of Riffs and 6 strings
- Peat Rex – Chief Executive Officer of Rhythm and Tempo
- Deaf Hank – Executive Vice President of Low-end and Oral Messaging
So that’ll be guitar, drums and vocals I’m guessing.
The music is genuinely different from any of the doom or stoner bands I’ve heard from before. I would chuck “sludge” into the mix and maybe a shade of death as well.
It takes on board noticeable influences from each genre – it’s slow, trippy, heavy, features fairly harsh vocals… An unusual combination, but one that works well at the hands of this Finnish trio. The tracks are quite long, too. Perhaps a sign of the experimentation going into them?
Either way, the best way to decide if you like it is to listen and that won’t cost you anything unless you want to donate or buy a cassette version. On bandcamp, each is available as a “pay what you want” download. Cassettes can be purchased at the following locations:
