I’ve actually had Gazpacho’s Demon for a few weeks and it kept slipping under the other stuff on my virtual desk. Oops. It came out on March 17th and the band recently gave me a kick up the arse as I promised I’d give it a write-up. My bad!
The album is made up of 4 songs. These songs are based on “the mad ramblings left behind by an unknown tenant in an apartment in Prague”, and delve deep within the demon that possessed the inhabitant and explore the evil he has caused and all that he is capable of. It’s pretty light stuff – there’s some justification for their comparison to Radiohead.
I’ll confess that on first listen I wasn’t too impressed as it’s just not quite my kind of thing. However, after leaving it on repeat in the background for a bit while I did some other work I didn’t find myself hating it. While Demon isn’t something I would actively listen to, it’s by no means bad music. For my money, the mildly trippy rhythms and floaty vocals could pass for one of The Beatles’ lighter numbers.
Despite being four tracks, the run length isn’t short, so you get your money’s worth – the song are approximately 10, 4, 12 and 19 minutes long apiece. There’s also about 6 tracks worth of variety in there. And an added bonus if you’re an accordion fan!
As I said, not my kind of thing but – as I’ve always maintained since I started doing these article – I’m only one person, and the music itself isn’t bad. At the time of writing, this Norwegian bunch have over 13,000 likes on facebook so I’m definitely out-voted!
