SoulSteal are interesting in that I’m not sure exactly which country they come from. Their facefart profile lists them as being from Nicosia, Cyprus which – as I’m sure you know – is the only divided capital city in the world. The north part is (sort of) Turkish, while the south is Greek.
Before I offend anyone by trying to oversimplify the whole Cypriot territorial dispute, I’ll jump on to the doom/death metal played by the three guys in SoulSteal.
Formed in 2001, the band didn’t release anything between 2002 and 2009 for various reasons relating to military service and study. As a result, they’re one of the most overqualified bands you’re likely to meet (two Masters degrees and two PhDs between them), and they likely know how to lock, load and put a bullet between your eyes from half a mile away.
Their first EP was released in 2009 to great acclaim. They followed it with a full album, Answers to Everything, in 2012. A follow-up is due before the end of 2013.
Below is a track from the first album which is quite representative of their sound. Slow, with a solid beat and a mixture of distorted and natural vocals. Toe-tappingly good when you’re sat at a desk writing up their NBotD post, at least. Their older material has a more traditional, less experimental sound. Examples of both can be found via their aforementioned facefart profile or via their YouTube channel.
