Exclusive: Prince Bishop tell us their six biggest influences

Prince Bishop take from many genres – from alt, post and prog rock – and this is witnessed on their new album, All is Due, which us out on Friday 25th November. The band have also just released their melodic new single, “Return”. With this in mind, we asked the band’s frontman Ben Trenerry to offer up six tracks that have greatly influenced their sound:

1. Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin

Nobody did band-in-a-room recordings better than Zep. They sound soulful and raw, and something we try to achieve versus the ultra-precise, over-produced ‘laptop recordings’ which are popular nowadays. This is a slightly different Zep, featuring some almost romantic jazz chords and liberal use of the Mellotron – again, vibes we love:

2. “The Court of the Crimson King” by King Crimson

Mystical and almost spiritual, as all music should be in my view. The song takes the listener on a journey across it’s 10 minutes. Mellotron features heavily and gives the song a real otherworldly vibe. The choir-esque backing vocals send shivers up my spine. Just a wonderful song from a great album:

3. “Us & Them” by Pink Floyd

This is glorious. Despite their subject matter, I find this song really uplifting and moving. It’s probably the chorus, which absolutely kicks. The organ at the start sounds amazing, its just so achingly beautiful this song.

4. “Logical Song” by Supertramp

The anthem for the introspective. The lyrics are absolutely wonderful, detailing the journey from boy to manhood. I love pop music with a message and this is probably one of the best. The sax solo absolutely slays here too, here isn’t enough sax in rock music:

5. “Grace” by Jeff Buckley

Again, this has a real mystical vibe to it. His stuff was really based in soul and the blues and this masterpiece song exemplifies this. Features some really interesting chords underpinned by some incredible lead work by @GaryLucas. The whole titular album is incredible:

6. “The Bends” by Radiohead

Another title track from an album I love. I like the blend of rock guitars here with the more alt / indie rock vibes. Features a cool middle 8 which circles back to a big ending. I dig all Radiohead’s work, but their earlier-rockier output really does it for me:
