Band of the Day: Thee Massacre

Thee Massacre - Horror[avatar user=”Mosh” size=”50″ align=”left” /]No, that’s not a mis-spelling – Thee Massacre is the new project from DJ Gunnarson who co-wrote some tracks on the last Cradle of Filth album (The Manticore). He also co-founded White Empress, but left to focus on this new band.

It’s early days, but they released a debut EP on Halloween which you can get from bandcamp for a ridiculously small amount of money. Based in Minnesota, they’ve done a few shows since their formation in 2013 and now that they’ve got an EP to promote, here’s hoping they extend the geographic range of those appearances. Most recently they opened for Gwar and Corrosion of Conformity in their home town [thanks to Nate for the corrected info there – Mosh].

A five piece, I would probably class them as “gothic death”  – harsh, guttural vocals and crunchy guitars with fast-paced drumming and occasional atmospheric keyboard-backed sequences.

The Horror EP has six tracks including an intro that’s predominantly spoken word (taken from “Elliot Roger’s Retribution”) and an intermediate 28-second offering that’s similarly just scene-setting. Musically, it had me hooked quite early on. Not too heavy, not too light with some great rhythms and tracks that don’t overstay their welcome. With titles like “Skin Suit” and “Drenched in Blood and Sweat” you know what you’re in for as far as subject matter goes! Quotes from Jeffrey Dahmer are used within “Bloodshed and Torture” and I’m not sure whether I’m more worried that a band are using them in a song, or that I recognised them…

The keyboards are very much part of the sound rather than just held back for a little section of their own here and there, and give the whole thing much more of a dramatic flair. If I have one complaint about the EP it’s that it’s over far too soon!

Grisly, dark and very easy to listen to, this is a collection of tracks worth checking out for the sick-minded.

Thee Massacre, never toured with GWAR or COC. They were the local opener in their town.

[…] gear damaged or stolen. Depressing reading, and I hope the scum who robbed Thee Massacre (former Band of the Day) get caught by a bunch of bikers who make SAMCRO look like […]
