Band of the Day: Tsibulin

Another incredibly talented solo artist for you to check out today. Harking from lands even colder than Glasgow is at the moment, we give you Tsibulin…

Simple things first – where are you from?

My name is Evgen, I’m from Tomsk, Russia, Siberia. A very cold and mysterious place.

How did you meet?

I’m a solo artist but I play with the drummer and bass player. The band takes my surname, this is Tsibulin.

What are your influences?

I think lots of genres and styles impact on me as a musician. That might be music of great guitar players like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Guthrie Govan. Also I love to listen to prog rock and prog metal which was created in early days. Bands and artists like Animals As Leaders, Plini, David Maxim Micic. Of course legendary Dream Theater impacts on my music in these later days.

Also I play in a death metal band called Dehydrated and that means I love brutal metal. My favorite bands are Aborted, Decapitated, Revocation, and Vader.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

My first album might be described like a compilation of musical ideas of a Siberian guitarist who is trying sound and look like his favourite guitar players!

Now I’m working in quite a different direction. This music is a mix of instrumental prog metal with heavy riffs, classical guitar parts and spiced up with avant-garde tunes. And of course my music could be called “unique” because that’s Siberian metal music.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Playing live is my favourite music thing. I love to play onstage and every show I’m trying share my emotions and passion sincerely with an audience as much as possible. That makes me tired, but mostly I feel happy.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

The first that appears in my head was when a time ago I played a show with my old band, and my amplifier fell down on the floor twice during the show.

The second thing is when me and my band were on a European tour, we played on the festival Obscene Extreme in Czech Republic. Almost for every performance of every band, people from the crowd had jumped to the stage, headbanged over there and jumped down into the crowd. That sounds pretty average but it looked really sick, trust me!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I play the guitar and mostly use the gear from Russian companies like Lepsky Guitars and AMT Electronics.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Recently I released a new single with a music video. This is a very important song for me and I want to share it with this world.

What are your plans for the rest of 2017, into 2018?

Currently I’m working on the new album and hopefully it will be released in 2018. Also I’m thinking about touring with my project.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I think I would choose Plini as the band before me and Animals As Leaders after me. I have a dream to go on tour with both of them!

From previous Band of the Day Crevassian: What is the strongest opening three tracks of any LP by any band you admire, and why?

I think that may be:

  1. First track of Animals As Leaders’ album The Madness of Many. That blew my mind with its rhythmical structure
  2. First track of the album by David Maxim Micic Bilo 3.0. That blew my mind with the melody, orchestral sound and pictures which were painted by the composer
  3. First track from the album of Images & Words by Dream Theater; “Pull Me Under”. You know what I mean if you know who Dream Theater is.

From another BotD, Sail: What’s the coolest moment you’ve had doing band stuff? What made you feel awesome and made the faff 100% worth it?

In my opinion that is the thing when we had recorded the new single, listened to the raw sound and realized that we’ve done a good job.

And from Tomorrow is Lost: If you could only take one thing on tour what would each member of the band take?

  • Me: Food
  • Bass player: Bass
  • Drummer: Drumsticks
