Mallory Knox / Lonely The Brave / Fatherson – KOKO, London (6th April 2017)

This was the final night of the Mallory Knox’ 14-date ‘Wired’ UK tour, and the second of two dates at KOKO in London. Before doors opened at 7pm, the queue of people snaked right round the side of the venue and back up as far as the crossing by Mornington Crescent tube station. If the show wasn’t sold out, it was certainly very close – once inside the photopit I turned round and could see excited little faces lining all of the various levels of this beautiful venue.

First on stage were Scottish indie-rock band Fatherson who played a great opening set of emotional and uplifting songs. The crowd seemed very receptive to the band’s simple and effective melodies; with the first few rows of people clapping and singing along by the end of their set. The band came across as very grounded and genuinely ecstatic to have been part of this tour. Definitely a band to check out if you see them on the bill in a venue near you.

Next to play to the heaving Camden crowd were Cambridge five-piece alt-rock band Lonely The Brave, who Sam and I had the pleasure of seeing play Fort Fest last summer. It seemed that vocalist David Jakes was a bit under the weather as he was hiding away at the back of the stage with a kettle and a mug of something comforting close to hand. Despite the sickness he put on a great performance, as did the rest of the band, who released new EP Diamond Days less than a month ago. Another great choice of support as the crowd seemed to enjoy their heavy-riffed set.

At almost exactly 9.15pm the house lights went down and the glow from two huge “MK” signs illuminated the stage. The packed crowd roared with excitement as Mallory Knox ran on, full of energy. The five-piece rock band from Cambridge played a very energetic set including tracks from their third studio album Wired (released on 10 March).

Vocalist Mikey Chapman bounced around the stage deploying his trademark strong and raspy vocals to the thrilled crowd. For a band who have not toured in over a year they haven’t lost their touch, putting on a great performance playing their radio-friendly, riff-heavy songs. The band’s team were filming their performance in 360-degrees, so keep a look out for that video, and you might even spot me and the other photographers trying to dodge the camera in the pit!
