The Prophets / Altered Sky / Autumn Ruin / Witterquick / Tan.Trum – The Arches, Coventry (28th March 2017)

On Wednesday night Katie headed to Coventry to catch an awesome five-band line-up at The Arches. This was date three of Scottish pop-rock band Altered Sky’s five-date UK tour with Witterquick and Autumn Ruin. Additional local support on the night came from The Prophets (Coventry) and Tan.Trum (Rugby).

At the last minute The Prophets graciously took over headline duties for the night when it transpired that an Altered Sky fan was going to have to leave early in order to catch their last train home and would therefore have missed their entire set. What an awesome thing for Altered Sky to do; give up their headline slot in order to ensure that one of their fans didn’t miss out!

First to take to the stage were teenage three-piece rock band Tan.Trum who we featured as Band Of The Day back in November last year. Bassist, Georgie, recently took over on lead vocals and she did a fantastic job! The band played a selection of tracks from their debut EP Revival, with Kate Thompson from The Prophets joining in on vocals for “Broken”. They also played a track from their brand-spanking-new EP TAKE3 (review coming soon), which is out now and sounding fantastic. Believe me when I say that Tan.Trum are not to be missed if they come to a town near you.

Next up were Witterquick from Exeter. The five-piece alt-rock band played a great set featuring tracks from their Beneath The Spinning Lights EP which was released last summer. The band have a Young Guns / Mallory Knox vibe to them, so if that is your bag then make sure you check them out.

Second of the touring support bands were five-piece melodic alt-rock band Autumn Ruin from Manchester, playing tracks from their 2016 debut EP We Make Our Own Damn Luck. I had the pleasure of watching these guys play Fort Fest last summer and they put on yet another high-energy and engaging performance tonight.

I haven’t seen Altered Sky live since they last played London back in August 2016, but I always look forward to their live shows. Since I last saw them there have been a few changes; most noticeably new female guitarist Tara, plus the band have added a new layer of theatre to their live shows. The stage was plunged into darkness and singer Ana Nowosielska walked on the stage dressed in a black hooded cloak and mask, carrying a lantern. The props were ceremoniously discarded to reveal Ana in her trademark technicolour glory, and the show began.

The five-piece female-fronted band from Glasgow played a fantastically passionate and energetic set featuring tracks from their album Without Wonderland (reviewed back when it came out) plus a cracking cover of “Titanium” (David Guetta feat. Sia) which really showcased Ana’s vocal talent. Altered Sky recently announced that they will be heading to Asia later this year and we couldn’t be happier for them!

Headlining the show were local four-piece female-fronted alt-rock band The Prophets, another former Band of the Day, who played a great set to a room full of highly excitable friends, family and fans. As well as playing tracks from their debut self-titled EP and their 2015 release Waiting For The End, the band also treated fans to a brilliant cover of “St Patrick” by PVRIS. The Prophets always put on a great show and are currently working on their third EP which will hopefully be out at the end of this year.

Some of our team will be back at The Arches from 6-9 April covering Mosh Against Cancer – hopefully see you there! Tickets are just £20 to see 33 bands over four-days, with all proceeds going to Teenage Cancer Trust. The same charity are being supported by Big Country and Altered Sky (and others) at Clydebank Town Hall this very evening. Get yer arses down there, have fun, and make a difference!
