Fleshgod Apocalypse / Carach Angren / Nightland – The Underworld, London (19th January 2017)

Continuing my epic gig crawl, I found myself once again in London town and at the Underworld for a night of symphonic godliness. I unfortunately missed all but the last 30 seconds of Nightland so I’m passing that bit to Aoife as she was there to bear witness to them. Take it away Aoife…

A: I’d not heard of Nightland prior to this night and I was curious as to how they would sound. Hailing from the same country as tonight’s headliner, I was blown away by their unique blend of symphonic death metal. Everything from their attire to their music was just perfect and they made for a superb opening act to a sold out show.

J: After having had a catch-up chat with Tomasso from Fleshgod, I made my way to my usual spot in the Underworld and after a short wait, the horror of Carach Angren (7) began. At first I wasn’t really sure what to make of them. Their theatrical style and ‘black metal’ seemed a bit odd but about halfway through their set I realised that you aren’t really meant to take them seriously and I began to warm to them. With a keyboard that moved around on a stand and an excellent reaction from the crowd, they delivered a superb set and they’re a band I’ll definitely keep a closer eye on in the future.

It was then time for the second bunch of Italians that make up Fleshgod Apocalypse (9) to take to the stage. Coming on to “In Aternum” from 2016’s King, the band exploded into life as did the crowd. Just like on previous occasions, the band captivated my attention for every second of their set and whilst the setlist was similar to last time, in some ways, it seemed better.

I think it was mainly the little things such as the unique microphone stands and candles atop the fake piano that really set it apart from their concert in Glasgow. The crowd were also a bit more lively and the crowd surfers appeared, even though there were signs not to. This did make myself and Katie our photographer chuckle at multiple points when the surfers headed towards the stage, only then to head back away from it as there was no room for them to go onto it. In short, their performance and setlist was nothing short of superb and I highly look forward to seeing Fleshgod at Heavy Scotland later on this year!
