Review: OPM – The Minge Dynasty

Ah, nothing but a little tasteless joke to make you warm to an album’s title. Probably bettering Enema of the State in terms of childish giggles, The Minge Dynasty came out on August 25th and celebrates the band’s 15th anniversary.

OPM are best known the for the stupidly catchy “Heaven is a Halfpipe”, and really didn’t explode as a result of that song. Which is a shame, as the four tracks presented here – if they’re any indication of what the guys can still do – are pretty damn good.

All of the tracks have a heavy dance or hip-hop vibe, but there’s no denying the rock credentials. They’re catchy, fun and the sort of thing you cam imagine going down a storm live with a bouncing crowd. Indeed, the vocals on the tracks are predominantly choral which just encourages you to sing along.

This isn’t thumping drums, wailing guitars and headbanging music but it’s silly, bouncy and in slightly bad taste. A nice departure from the heavier material we usually cover on here. Essentially, if you like the age-old “Heaven is a Half Pipe” then you know what to expect.

“Millionaire Like Me” pokes fun at the rich rapper types with a chorus you’ll be singing in no time. “Why You (So Crazy)” questions why women are all so bonkers when men treat them so well. It’s more of a rap number than “Millionaire” but I’m prepared to forgive it simply because it’s nicely silly.

“Speakers” is a track that doesn’t so much bounce as spring, or go “boing”. “Just Lust” rounds things off with something closer to a pop/rock track – up-tempo and with plenty of guitar in the background. An absolute toe-tapper.

Don’t take it seriously and this is a great bunch of party songs – which is what OPM have been plying for years.

The UK tour only just started so if you do want to catch these songs live, then the dates are over here.
