Review: Diamond Youth – Nothing Matters

Diamond Youth - Nothing Matters[avatar user=”Mosh” size=”50″ align=”left” /]One of the lighter albums I’ve listened to / reviewed in recent weeks, Nothing Matters is the debut from Baltimore alt-rock crew Diamond Youth.

It’s not metal, but definitely rock with a huge amount of reverb and head-nodding riffage that makes it sound like “Queens of the Muse Age”, but with an even greater nod to classic rock material of the late 60’s and 70’s.

Some of the tracks are a little trippy, such as “Spinning”, which further lends to the music’s heritage. It’s all good, though, with some real belters hidden amongst the slower numbers. From the moment it starts, you just know that “Far Away From Earth” is just building up to some kind of explosion. Funnily, this particular track makes me think more of Nirvana than anything else.

Top track for me, though, is probably “In The Clouds” which is just a wonderful roller coaster of rock. It just pushes you from the start right to the closing chords. If you need to catch your breath afterwards, it’s followed by one of the slowest songs on the album, “Riptide” – music you can lie back and watch clouds move to.

Sometimes it’s nice to step outside of your comfort zone and for me listening to Diamond Youth was pretty much that. I’m more a classic-metal-and-various-offshoots kind of guy, but that didn’t stop me enjoying this little venture down a different street.

Nothing Matters is out on May 19th through Topshelf Records
