RIP Frank M Heafield (Hanging Death) 1996 – 2018

A bit of a shocker, this one. We’ve lost quite a few legends over recent months from various medical issues (usually cancer) and suicide. In this instance we’re informing you of a young musician who has been taken from us at the incredibly young age of only 22. Further details are unavailable and we apologise for the initial version of this post which was based on the only information we had at the time.

One tribute came to us from Gilson of Imperative Music who featured Heafield’s band, Hanging Death, on volume 15 of their series of compilations. By all accounts, Heafield was keen, talented, professional and a joy to work with. Hanging Death were gearing up for a US tour covering 16 dates through August and September, a promising act with a definite future ahead of them.

As ever, we’ll celebrate the talent of those we’ve lost with a sample of their work.

Gutted. Frank M Heafield was one of a kind.He was wise beyond his years & he was a trusting soul.Too trusting I always thought and that worried me.I told him as much.He had a heart of gold,a light about him and a uniqueness that was entirely his. That worried me.The few that are so different from the others either get eaten up by the world or become stars. Both scenarios were possible with Frank.Inevitable. When I heard that he had been missing for days,my heart felt pained. All sorts of possible reasons as to why ran through my head. Most made me feel… Read more »

I was Frank’s foster dad in New Hampshire, where he was born. Other commenters have noted that Frank was too trusting, and they’re right. It’s something we talked about often over the years in the context of keeping him safe. He was also the most relentlessly optimistic kid I’ve ever known. In light of what his mom and step dad did to him as a child, his optimism and trust is even more amazing. Most kids in his position would never trust anyone ever again. Not Frank. He saw the best in everyone, often ignoring obvious warning signs. After a… Read more »

thank you. frank is awesome kind and driven. he never would have taken his own life. we knew that with in 5 years his music would be happening. he rarely got discouraged when he did hed send live streams or riffs to me and they were very advanced for a self taught 22 yro. I wish I went out to see him in chicago and jam with him but I was unable to leave Massachusetts. what made him so beautiful is he was far from the stereotypical metal head. he is very open minded and he has more of a… Read more »

Time for a retraction, lads. No one knows that Frank was murdered. It’s in poor taste to report that someone has been murdered without a credible source.I know you meant no harm, now remove the part that states that he was murdered,so everyone else knows too. Thank you. WHAT FOLLOWS IS MY POST ON THE MATTER THAT IS NOW POSTED ON FRANK’S FB WALL: The cause of death in Frank’s death remains UNKNOWN it’s vastly irresponsible to spread rumors & at best, that is what some of you are doing. All that is known is that his body was pulled out of the… Read more »

I spoke with the SF County Coroner’s office in August. They confirmed that foul play was involved and there was an ongoing investigation.

Dave, is this really true? Could we connect at some point? I’d like to know more about what happened. I met Frank very early in my social services career. He was/is very special to me. I’m just devastated.Thanks.
