Metal all-stars plan relief song for Grim Reaper’s Steve Grimmett

To get any latecomers up to date: while on tour in Ecuador last month, Grim Reaper frontman Steve Grimmett fell very ill. It turns out a lesion resulting from his long-term diabetes became infected and the infection spread – rapidly. An early diagnosis involving removing a couple of toes extended to more and more of his leg until doctor’s finally arrested the spread of the infection by amputating his right leg just below the knee.

The most recent post on the band’s facebook page – where Steve’s wife Millie has been updating fans – states that they hope to have his leg stitched up this Friday. At this point a ten-day clock kicks off and if there are no further issues the he can fly home.

We’d like to offer a huge, personal “fuck you” to Steve’s insurance company who decided they couldn’t be arsed to help out. If you jump into a recent interview with Millie here, she explains why not, but let’s face it – it’s just shit.

There are several fundraisers and plans kicking about which is brilliant. You can read about many on the band’s facebook page, though one main one is over on JustCaring if you want to make a donation.

Jimmy Kay of Canada’s The Metal Voice streamed a live interview recently with Steve and Millie Grimmett to update fans on Steve’s ongoing medical condition. Venom Inc.’s Tony Dolan and former Anthrax vocalist Neil Turbin joined the conversation. It is the second interview Kay has had in the past week’s since announcement of Steve Grimmett’s hospitalization in Ecuador.

During the near hour-long interview, Kay was the first to announce a special fundraiser show in Grimmett’s hometown of Swindon (England). Planned for April 1, the event is being organized by Brian Keene at Riff’s Bar. Bands for the event will be announced shortly.

Also announced was a special collaboration of metal artists that are coming together to record Grim Reaper material in effort to help raise additional funds for Steve’s rising medical and recovery costs. Spearheaded by Dolan, Turbin, Kay, and Sy Keeler (Onslaught), contributors currently include Gary Holt (Exodus), Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens (ex-Judas Priest), Blaze Bayley (ex-Iron Maiden), Doro Pesch, Lipps (Anvil), Marta Gabriel (Crystal Viper), Neil Turbin (Deathriders), Jonas Hornqvist (Bleed the Hunger), Ross The Boss (Manowar), Sy Keeler (Onslaught), Bobby ‘Blitz’ Ellsworth (Overkill), Jimmy Mantas (Venom Inc.), Nick Bowcott (ex-Grim Reaper), John Gallagher (Raven), Mantas (Venom), and more to be announced soon. The recording will be produced by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Anvil).

Keep your eyes open and we’ll have news about it as soon as we get it.

Best wishes to Steve, Millie and their nearest and dearest. And fuck the insurance company.
