#RoadToBOA2018 – Voodoo Sioux

As ever, we’re going to try and cover every single Jäger, New Blood and SOPHIE stage band before Bloodstock kicks off on August 9th. Your chance to check them out and start planning which bands to get there early for!

Trust us when we tell you that this is bound to result in some frustrating clashes because, as ever, there are some great bands on these three stages.

Our thanks to all the bands for taking the time out to answer our questions!

Voodoo Sioux – Jägermeister Stage, Saturday

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Two of us are from Shifnal in Shropshire and two from Walsall in the West Midlands.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We had a break of around twelve years, but we first formed in 1991. Yes, that long ago!

Where does the name of the band come from?

One of the very first songs we ever had a play around with was “Chase The Voodoo”. The name was basically an extension of that. Voodoo coupled with the Sioux Indian imagery. We thought that was kinda cool.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

It’s bass driven hard rock. Multi-coloured metal has been one description. The tracks can be bright and vibrant but listen to the lyrics and you find a dark and sordid underbelly, straight from the cellar in Nick’s (vocals) mind.

We often ask people who we remind them of. If a friend asked them, who would they compare us to? And they struggle to answer. We love that! No two songs are alike but we definitely have a ‘sound’.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Our live shows? You just have to come and see us! We love recording, we love rehearsing and constructing compositions, but we thrive on stage. The light, the dark, the music, the whites of people eyes… that’s where it’s at for us. Mario (bass) steals the show every single time; he is the catalyst for the rest of us to (try and) keep up. On stage he is terrifying and electrifying the audience at 500mph. All we can do is hang onto his coat tails. And we love it, and so does the crowd! No one ever leaves the venue disappointed. People know when they’ve Chased The Voodoo!

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Our manager has been and has always raved about it. How friendly, chilled and well organised it is. He’s a tight bugger as well, so awesome value for money was a big thumbs-up for him! We can’t wait to soak it all up for ourselves.

Did you enter M2TM thinking you could win it? Which region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

Quite a while back, Nigel (drums), emailed a video and bio to the Bloodstock crew on the off chance of getting to play, then out of the blue, we got the reply! It read something along the lines of, “Not something we’d normally book, but we just love it and think it will really work on the Jägermeister Stage.” We were blown away!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

You’ll need to hold on tight. To quote the Friday night headliners, we’ll be ‘freewheel burning’ through six or seven manic tracks. To some it may be eclectic, even surprising, but it’ll be hard and heavy nonetheless. Trust us, won’t be taking our feet off the gas till the final note rings out!

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

Gojira! Mario and Nigel cannot wait to see those guys play again! Others we hope to get chance to see on the Saturday are Cannibal Corpse, Venom Inc., Alestorm and Orphaned Land from Israel. Friends have also told us to try and check out Septic Flesh, Power Trip and Cadence Noir.

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re currently working on the follow up to our Grotesques Familiares album with producer Mark Stuart (Magnum). Two singles from it – “(Falling Off The) Edge Of The World” and “Into The Garden” are already available, but we should have the whole thing wrapped up and ready to release next Spring.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Haha, we’re good boys really! We behave ourselves these days and stories from back in the day are unprintable, sorry. However, one of the most bizarre things happened after we opened for the Little Angels back in 1993. We received letters, complaints and comments about Mario actually scaring and unsettling members of the audience with his bass playing and on-stage persona. You have to see him live to understand.

Jager, Hobgoblin Ale, Red Bull, Kingstone Press Cider, Kaltenberg Beer or Bulleit Bourbon? And, yes, we’ll be counting all the votes!

Hobgoblin Ale! And red wine for Jon (guitars)!
