#ROADTOBOA2017 – Red Rum

As ever, we’re going to try and cover every single Jäger, New Blood and SOPHIE stage band before Bloodstock kicks off on August 10th. Your chance to check them out and start planning which bands to get there early for!

Trust us when we tell you that this is bound to result in some frustrating clashes because, as ever, there are some great bands on these three stages.

Our thanks to all the bands for taking the time out to answer our questions!

Red RumSophie Lancaster Stage, Saturday

Where are you guys from?

We’re originally from Nottingham, though now we have members stretching all the way from Reading to Huddersfield.

How long have you guys been playing together?

The band first started as a college project in 2011 and has been going strong ever since.

Where does the band name come from?

It’s a combination of the colour red; the colour of blood, anger and lust, combined with rum; a pirate’s favourite libation. Also conveniently it spells murder backwards!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We’re a unique blend of pirate metal and neoclassical music, with the odd folk instrument thrown in.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Everyone at Bloodstock is there for the drinking, metal, and good times. Cramming the SOPHIE tent full of pirates gets you all three!

Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when? And tell us about the experience

Yes, we played on the Sophie Lancaster stage on the Thursday of 2015. It was an amazing experience, being the only band playing on the whole site at the time we packed out the tent! Seeing so many people jumping around to our music was a real thrill to watch.

How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage at Bloodstock?

We received a phone call from Simon at Bloodstock in early July explaining that a slot had opened up on the Sophie Lancaster stage and that he wanted us to fill it. Naturally we couldn’t say yes fast enough!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We’ll be playing a mixture of songs from our first EP, With Gods By Our Side, and album, Booze and Glory, and there may even be a sneak-peek at some new material!

Which main stage band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

There are lots of amazing bands playing on the main stage, we wouldn’t like to clash with any of them!

What are you working on at the moment? Can we expect any new releases in the future, or perhaps sneak peaks at Bloodstock?

We currently have a new album in the works with no confirmed release date as yet, and as mentioned, there may even be a little sneak-peek at some new material at Bloodstock this year

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done on tour?

Two events stand out in our minds, both involving alcohol! In 2014 after playing a show in Cork on the Alestorm tour, everyone ended up getting destroyed by doing endless beer-bongs with the lads of Lagerstein. And in 2016 after a show in Edinburgh on the Skiltron tour, everyone decided to go out clubbing. Most of us don’t remember getting back to our flat that night!

And finally, if you had to pick one drink, which would it be: Jager, Hobgoblin Ale, Kraken, Kingstone Press Cider, Kaltenberg Beer, or Bulleit Bourbon? And yes, we will be counting all of the votes!

Well, as we appear to be all out of rum for this one, Hobgoblin is the obvious choice for our crew!

Editor’s note – we have given Kraken a vote on our total on behalf of Red Rum as the option should, of course, have been in the question!
