#ROADTOBOA2017 – Devil’s Playground

As ever, we’re going to try and cover every single Jäger, New Blood and SOPHIE stage band before Bloodstock kicks off on August 10th. Your chance to check them out and start planning which bands to get there early for!

Trust us when we tell you that this is bound to result in some frustrating clashes because, as ever, there are some great bands on these three stages.

Our thanks to all the bands for taking the time out to answer our questions!

Devil’s Playground – Hobgoblin New Blood Stage, Friday

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re dotted around the Midlands actually, but you could probably say Birmingham.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We’ve been together just shy of two years now, although it started as a project around three years ago. Those of us who started it could never have imagined the monster that it would turn into.

Where does the name of the band come from?

We were throwing around a lot of ideas until Devil’s Playground came about. Even then some of us didn’t think it was ‘metal’ enough, but it really does fit our music and people realise this as soon as they see us live, even just once.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

The thing about Devil’s Playground is we all went into this with the intention of not being bound by any specific sub-genre. We simply write what we enjoy and that’s really comes across in our music, as we all have different influences. Nu-metal, thrash, British metal, djent… it’s all in there and the dual male and female vocals gives us a lot of flexibility.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Having six people on the stage really helps, to be honest. Our live show is pretty explosive and we aim to have a good time, every time. That really energises the audience and with the tag line of ‘Are you ready to play?’ we really try to live up to that. You won’t be sorry if you watch us.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

We have indeed (four of us have actually played it before), but that aside it’s a pretty incredible festival. It’s a great size and there’s a real community feel at Bloodstock that you don’t get anywhere else. We can’t wait.

Did you enter M2TM thinking you could win it? Which region did you win?

We entered the Coventry region. We definitely thought we could win, but that’s not to say we thought it was going to be easy. We were up against some stiff competition and every round was pretty nail biting when the results were being announced. Plus you never really know what Simon Hall is looking for on the night of the final. Throughout the whole experience though we met some pretty awesome people and made a lot of friends with the other bands. It really was a bit of a revolution for the Coventry metal scene and we can’t wait experience it from the audience side next year.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

It really doesn’t let up. We’ll grab you by the balls as soon as the first track kicks in and we won’t let go until it’s over. We keep the energy up the whole way through with the set we’ve chosen, but every song is memorable in its own right. It definitely won’t feel like a half hour song.

Which main stage band do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

We’re playing Friday and I’m sure we each have our own preference for who we want to see the most, but we’re all looking forward to Soilwork – so let’s hope.

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re currently working on our first full-length album, which should be done by October. We’re working with some pretty incredible people and are stupidly excited about it.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done on tour?

What a question! We wish we had some awesome story to tell, but as this point we haven’t yet toured (which will be changing very soon).

Jager, Hobgoblin Ale, Kraken, Kingstone Press Cider, Kaltenberg Beer or Bulleit Bourbon?  And, yes, we’ll be counting all the votes!

Kraken all the way.
