#ROADTOBOA Interview: Chronicles

Bloodstock 2016 logoHere we go again… Last year we covered every band on the Hobgoblin New Blood and Jagermeister stages in the run-up to Bloodstock 2015. This year, we’re going one better and aim to have interviews from all the bands on those two stages as well as all of those on the SOPHIE stage prior to the event kicking off on August 11th. That’s almost 100 interviews to get online for you lucky people over the course of the next couple of weeks. I bloody love this job, but you lot owe me a beer at Catton Hall, right?

Thanks to all the bands who’ve taken the time to respond!

Chronicles – Hobgoblin New Blood stage, Sunday

Vocalist Bane Holland rattled off the following for us:

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re Chronicles and we’re a Nottingham/Derby based band, mucka.

How did you meet?

Me and Leigh are cousins, we’ve been in different bands and on the scene since we were kids and always wanted to do something together. Both of us are massively into comic books and cool films and decided to do a band based on everything we’re into. The other lads have all been in different bands with each of us over the years so we just grabbed this bunch and the rest is history :)

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Just over two years but we’ve only been gigging since May last year. We spent a lot of time getting our sound together and getting our songs how we wanted them.

Where does the name of the band come from?

The songs we write ‘Chronicle’ the adventures and stories of heroes and villains in the comics and films/series that we’re into :)

What are your influences – individually or as a band?

We’re collectively massively influenced by all things DC and Marvel, as well as classic films like The Crow, The Alien films, and series like The Walking Dead and Game Of Thrones, as well as a tonne of other stuff. Musically we’re all into similar bands as well as very different genres. Predominantly we’re into hard hitting, fast paced metal like Killswitch Engage, Slipknot, and Mastodon but we’re also individually into old school hiphop, classic rock and progressive metal.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

I’d have to say song content, drawing heavily from stories that all geeks like ourselves can relate to. We write our songs in such a way that if you’re just a fan of music, you’ll be happy with what you hear but if you’re a comic book fan, you’ll understand the references and dig what we do :)

What’s your live show like – why should the baying hordes troop over to the stage you’re playing on to watch you?

Because we’re fucking good! We rehearse hard so we can play hard. You don’t get no namby pambying poncing about from us. We have a combined force of a thunderous band that rip through tracks like fucking crazy men and two frontmen that look like they’re ready to fuck you up and snap your neck sooner than look at ya. If you’re into proper metal and not afraid to bang your head, come join us.

When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?

We were contacted by Bloodstock representatives and told we had the slot after sending the new EP tracks over a while back. I was just sat playing some Starwars Battlefront at the time when they rudely interrupted me, the set of bastards ;)

We are buzzin! Such a fantastic festival, we are honoured to get the slot.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

A good one \m/

Which main stage band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

Mastodon and Gojira are playing the Saturday and we’re playing Sunday so we’re safe :)

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re shooting three videos with Stewart King of SK Media and getting our songs out there for your audial and visual pleasure. We’re also writing new material ready for recording a mini album next year with ex-SikTh frontman Justin Hill producing the goods for us :)

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done on tour?

I aint even gonna answer this because I’m fucking disgusting.

What advice would you give to a young band just starting out today?

Don’t bother if you want to actually have any money whatsoever. Other than that, do it cuz you’ll have an amazing time. You only get out what you put in though, and you’re only as good as your weakest member.

If you could be part of any 3-band line-up who else would you have on the bill? One band above you and one below – a chance to plug a smaller, unsigned act!

We’d love to support Slipknot so they’d headline, opening up before us would have to be Beholder, give them young upstarts a bit of a leg up in the industry ;)

What stage / time are you playing at Bloodstock (if you have your slot yet!)

All we know is it’s Sunday, no times yet. Just keep ya eyes peeled and come see us! :)

Chronicles have a brand new EP, The Measure, being released on August 6th and it will be available to purchase via all the usual digital outlets.
