Band of the Day / Interview: Patient Sixty-Seven

Patient Sixty-Seven - ImbalanceAnother in our series of quick introductions to your new favourite bands. Today, give greetings to Patient Sixty-Seven…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Tom: All the way from Perth, Australia, I believe it’s the most isolated city in the world!

How did you meet?

Tom: We started around 2 years ago now, between myself (Tom) and our guitarist Dylan! It was definitely something that snowballed as time went on – we were messing around writing music for a bit of fun and slowly but surely it started morphing towards the heavier side of things! We had some pretty cool song ideas and we just kind of developed them as we went along.

The truth is – we never really had the intention to play live, or really even release anything publicly! It’s not like our mindset was that of a band starting out where the goals and ambitions were clear. That’s something that’s come with time for us – but in the beginning it was just kind of like ‘yeah, this sounds cool’ and then we had a few songs and decided we would release them under a name. Then we thought we’d try and play a few live shows – so yeah it was definitely gradual! I’ve always enjoyed making music (though I’d never been in a full fledged band before this) and Dylan has been in bands before so once we started moving towards this project being something more than a studio band – it moved along really nicely!

Jarryd: I have known JL since high school, and met Declan a few years ago through one of my mates that worked with him, met Dyl and Tom after I joined the band.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Tom: It’s an interesting one! When we initially started in mid-2014 we had a close friend of ours fill in on drums and our current guitarist Declan on bass! We had a little bit of a break in the months following our first few shows and only established a full lineup early last year! So it’s coming up a year and a half of us playing shows together as a 5 piece!

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Tom: Shutter Island is a favourite movie of mine, and the name kind of just stuck! Patient Sixty-Seven represents some of the coolest themes found in the film – if you haven’t seen it – I’d definitely recommend checking it out!

What are your influences – individually or as a band?

Tom: I think we’re really proud that everyone in the band carries their own influences and listens to different stuff! We all enjoy the heavier side of things, it really does range though! It’s hard to kind of pencil a few bands in as key influences.

Jarryd: Individually I listen to a multitude of genres, from acoustic to punk to rap to slam, I enjoy it all and everything in between. And thats how the band operates aswell, we all listen to the same genres but we all have our favourite bands that we draw inspiration from. It’s a melting pot of genres which is always a good thing.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Tom: I like to think there’s a good blend of styles found in our music, something for everyone. We’re only starting to find our feet and sound as a band – but we try to just bring all the energy we can. There’s heavy, there’s ambient parts and we try to incorporate some orchestral stuff too! Kind of like a heavy music movie soundtrack.

Jarryd: Our music is fast paced, energetic, some great breakdowns and amazing choruses. Every song on the EP is fun to listen to as it’s so different to the last track, and the same can be said for the new material we are working on. A lot of bands these days are just going djent or nothing but down tempo beatdown, which don’t get me wrong I love, but it’s good to mix it up a bit.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Tom: I really just write about anything that evokes a personal response, something I’m passionate about. I like to put feeling into our lyrics without it feeling forced. I definitely feel more comfortable writing toward what comes naturally rather than trying to manufacture an emotion or cover something that I’m not about.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Tom: For Perth, we probably played a fair amount of shows last year! Definitely more than we could’ve imagined which is awesome. We try and keep the energy locked in and encourage people to move around. If they’ve taken the time to watch us, they’ve given us their attention and that’s everything we can ask from them.

Jarryd: I can’t remember how many shows we have played, all have been amazing though. In terms of what our live show is like, from where I am standing I enjoy it, judging by the crowd moving and singing lyrics back they enjoy it to. Everyone has fun at our shows, and that’s the reason we play music. To fuck shit up.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Tom: Some of the shows that we’ve seen played at Amplifier Bar where we’ve been privileged enough to play on a few occasions have been wild. The shows there are infectious. From my own person perspective – our EP launch at the Civic last year was wild. Circle pits and an incredible crowd response – we were so happy to have been apart of that night.

Jarryd: In terms of at a Patient show? I wish I had some amazing story, but just the general people crowdsurfing/moshing is so cool to see. Oh, we had a crack addict at JL and I’s very first show. She ran into the venue, and my idiot friend paid for her. She was incredibly vocal, not in the most positive way, but hey it was a good experience.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Tom: Probably a question for the other guys in the band in terms of specifics – but I know JL’s kit has a giant Zoidberg on the front of his kick drum…

Jarryd: I am a sucker for Fender. At the moment I have a Fender P-bass and am desperately looking for a beautiful Fender Tele I can snuggle up next to at night. In terms of the stuff that make me loud, my Ampeg SVT-610HLF and Ashdown ABM500 mixed with a Tech 21 NYC sansamp, is pretty much the most beautiful tone I have heard.

What are your plans for 2016?

Tom: We really just want to build on and consolidate what was a wonderful 2015 for us. New music is ready to go so keep an eye out on our pages in June!
Please do check us out on Facebook (Facebook.com/patientsixtyseven), Twitter (twitter.com/patient67band) or Instagram (www.instagram.com/patient67band) to keep up with what we’re doing!

Jarryd: 2016 has been big and will get bigger for us. Our plan is to smash out this album, make it beautiful to everyone’s ears, play a bunch more shows and get rowdy with everyone we can get rowdy with. We have a bunch more stuff in the works but we got to keep it on the hush hush at the moment, so stay tuned.

If you could be part of any 3-band line-up (as support or headlining) who else would you have on the bill?

Tom: Drake and Future are heading out on a tour soon right? Put us on that please, haha.

Jarryd: Hmm, 3 bands including us. They will have to go to two of the bands that have influenced me incredibly, it has to go Have Heart and The Chariot on a co-headliner tour and we support. If any of those bands come back, I would lose my shit.
