Pre-Bloodstock interview: Codex Alimentarius

Codex Alimentarius logo 192Due to the huge number of bands playing at Bloodstock this year, and the fact that our two roving reporters will actually want to watch some of them, we’re doing a little round of pre-festival interviews this year. We’re focussing on the bands playing the Jagermeister and Hobgoblin New Blood Stages so they get a chance to convince you to go and watch them. Remember, these guys and gals are the future of our musical world!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Exeter, Devon

How did you meet?

D, Stan & Tim met back in 2009 along with our former singer to start a band and get out and play some shows and have fun. Elliott and Frank met and worked with D via there other band Cambion on Bored Stiff Records. And D had known Ray for a while before and when we needed a new singer we all said ‘that’s the guy we want!’ we had played with and seen his former band Flame Fracture many times and he had the most brutal voice.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Stan, D & Tim have been playing together in Codex for almost 6 years. Frank & Elliott joined us 4 years ago, Ray is the latest addition and Ray has been with us 2 years. Sounds cheesy but it feels like we have all been playing together since the start.

Where does the name of the band come from?

The band started with more of a political view and not only did we like the name but it is the name of the commission that regulates our food – we wanted something people could look up and understand, we all eat so it makes sense that we know what goes into it.

What are your influences – individually or as a band?

We have a wide range of influences, especially as there are 6 of us. We range from power metal bands such as Helloween to Avantasia, Amon Amarth to Napalm Death and Meshuggah to Necrophagist and a spoon full of Beethoven.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We have such a mix of influence I think it helps make us the sound the way we do. We never aim to sound like anyone other than Codex.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We try and make our shows heavy and fast pace, full of energy – we look at the bands we love and ones we play with and try and hit that bar.

When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?

We played a show with Beholder and Simon Hall sent us a message a few days later saying how impressed he was and offered us a slot.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We’ve got a mix of songs from our debut EP, The Infinite Growth Paradigm vs Finite Resources, our newest release The Hand of Apophis and some newer tracks that will be featuring on our debut album! There’s mix of slow and fast, brutality and melody in there – we can’t wait to play it!

Which main stage band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

Any of them! It is a really honour to play this festival with a killer line-up and it would be shame to clash with any of them.

What are you working on at the moment?

We are currently working on our new album and we are hoping to unleash more on this soon.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done on tour?

Frank our drummer is generally the wildest thing around.

What advice would you give to a young band just starting out today?

Work hard and play hard!

If you could be part of any 3-band line-up who else would you have on the bill? One band above you and one below – a chance to plug a smaller, unsigned act!

Its hard to say but a tie between Amon Amarth & Avantasia as headliners. We really enjoy hitting the road with Ascaris, great guys and they certainly pack a punch live!

Codex Alimentarius play the Hobgoblin New Blood Stage on the Saturday.
