[avatar user=”Mosh” size=”50″ align=”left” /]Another April, another headlining tour from the ever-entertaining Suburban Legends. I’ll get to them shortly, but first their touring support-meister, MC Lars.

Not an act I’d heard of before, but certainly one that a section of the crowd were familiar with, MC Lars is (in the words of SL themselves) a nerd who raps. Armed with a microphone and a laptop, he belts out spitfire lyrics about the Edgar Allan Poe, Game of Thrones, computer games…

I’m not a rap fan by any stretch, but I have found that rap and rock cross over very well, especially if you add a big dollop of humour. This is something Lars throws around with abandon. Sporting a silver Zelda cartridge on a thick chain, he interacted with the crow brilliantly while belting out a great collection of songs.

“Singing Emo” features a segment from Hearts that Hate, BFS/People on Vacation’s Jaret gifts vocals to another track and the introduction of a song featuring Suburban Legends let the two acts merge on stage for a song before MC Lars departed and the headliners took over… no gap between sets!

Suburban Legends are natural performers and entertainers. Funnily, or perhaps not, they seem to keep company with a similar group of bands – Bowling for Soup, Patent Pending and the like are all very adept at audience participation and doing far more than than just playing songs on a stage. SL are simply a superb live act and tonight they – once again – completely failed to disappoint. I don’t think they could put on a bad show if they tried.

The ninety-minute set passed in a blink of an eye, filled with classic material, popular covers, a couple of new songs and the mandatory audience participation. Tonight we had Irn-Bru chugging which resulted in a very wet stage and two soaked contestants. Also some good photos and a cheering crowd, so all’s good.

As far as the performance part goes, Suburban Legends have all the moves and choreography of the likes of Take That, West Life and so forth… but with the very important addition of actual musical talent and a great repertoire of material. My personal favourite on this score is “Hey DJ” with the band constantly in motion, sidestepping and sliding past each other. Plus it’s one of the catchiest songs they do.

Crowdsurfing was enjoyed by band and fans alike – a challenge in a venue with a ceiling barely seven feet tall – and only one band member managed to smack their head on the dividing “bump” at head-height (get well soon, Klemms…). My daughter and her friend thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and my wife says she can’t recall the last time she grinned for nigh on 2 1/2 hours in one shot.

There was definitely a slightly bigger crowd here than last time, and the band will be back in Autumn once the new album drops in May. Here’s hoping they sell out this time. They deserve to, and anyone turning up won’t be disappointed. They’re one of the best value-for-money shows in town in terms of sheer entertainment.
