Classic Covers: In This Moment – In The Air Tonight

This isn’t the first time we’ve covered a cover (ahem) of a Phil Collins number. In fact, it’s almost dot on a year since we featured Hellyeah’s cover of “I Don’t Care Anymore” which we judged had been given a suitably metallic makeover.

Now it’s In This Moment who step up to the plate, taking on a song that’s probably even better known: “In The Air Tonight”. It’s one of two song Collins performed after stepping off Concorde and taking to the stage in Philadelphia, making him the only artist to play both sides of the Atlantic on the original Live Aid in 1985. If that scores you a winner in a pub quiz, I want 10%. He also played drums for Eric Clapton’s set if that gets you the bonus round.

Anyway, In This Moment have subtly twisted the original’s haunting melody into something darker which wholly suits their new album Ritual, from which this cover is lifted. The album’s out on the 21st of this month and you’ll be able to find our review elsewhere on these pages.

In the meantime, sit back and appreciate what Maria Brink and her twisted cohorts have done to one of the best-selling songs of the 80’s.
