[avatar user=”Mosh” size=”50″ align=”left” /]A song familiar to pretty much any metalhead and justifiably so. Perhaps Metallica’s most mature and powerful track of the pre-Black period, which also led to their first music video. Based on the 1935 anti-war novel Johnny Got His Gun, this is a classic slice of metal for guitar, bass and drums.

Or how about lyre, mandolin, recorder…?

This version is by a band from Belarus, Stary Olsa (Стары Ольса), who specialise in the use of medieval instruments. Fifteen years and eight albums on and they demonstrated how well that can shape a modern-day song with traditional musical techniques during a TV broadcast. The only disappointment is that they’ve only done about half of the song, but what they have done is 100% superb.
