Band of the Day: Death of Youth

We’re getting heavy today…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re all from around the Bexley area.

How did you meet?

I knew Will since he played drums in my previous band and Dann was in a band that we played a couple of shows with. When piecing the line up for this project together, Will was a no-brainer since he helped write the basslines for the Between Chapters EP so already knew the songs and expressed an interest in joining if I was to turn a project into a full band, and I asked Dann if he might be interested since he’s into a lot of the bands I’m influenced by.

How long have you been playing as a band?

The project started in April of this year as I had the desire to be in a band along the lines of Touche Amore, Departures, La Dispute, Casey etc, but I struggled to find members, so I decided to write an EP by myself and then use that as a way to recruit new band members. As a full band, we started practising together in September.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

It’s named after a song by Departures, who are one of my primary influences.

What are your influences?

The main ones musically would be Touche Amore, Departures, La Dispute, Pianos Become the Teeth, More Than Life, and Casey. There’s probably also a little bit of Funeral for a Friend creeping in there as well since they’re my favourite band of all time, so I imagine everything I do musically will have a tiny bit of them in there.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We have the heavy intensity and screamed vocals that are associated with hardcore, but combine that with strong sense of melody and introspective lyrics. While the songs are aggressive in nature, that aggression comes from melancholy rather than anger.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Mainly just general life experiences. A couple of months before I started writing the EP, I came out of a relationship that meant a lot to me, so a lot of the emotions I was feeling about that ended up feeding into my lyrics as I was trying to process everything. It’s not all gloom and doom though, since the last song on the EP “Tapestry” is more about overcoming the rough times and how they help to form you into a better person.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We haven’t played any live shows yet, but we’re hoping to get some shows booked relatively soon.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Obviously, we haven’t played any gigs yet, but in mine and Will’s old band, our singer put on a Burger King crown partway through the gig, and the crowd started chanting “BURGER KING! BURGER KING!”

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I play a Fender Stratocaster guitar that I feel provides some really nice guitar tones, and that’s normally played through a Marshall combo amp. Dann currently plays a Cort C5H Bass (with plans to upgrade to a Fender Jazz), and he plays that through an Orange OR120 head, and Will uses Zildjian and Meinl Cymbals as well as Pearl Double Pedals.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our debut EP Between Chapters. While the rest of the band didn’t contribute as much to it due to me only expanding it to a full band project following its release, it’s an EP I’m incredibly proud of and I’m incredibly excited about eventually playing these songs live.

What are your plans for 2018?

2018’s nearly over now, but I’m hoping that we’ll at least play one gig before the year’s out, but we’ll have to see how things go. As for 2019, I imagine we’ll definitely be trying to play as many gigs as possible. We’re currently talking about possibly going on tour next summer as well, but nothing’s been confirmed as of yet.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Touche Amore, Departures, La Dispute, Casey etc would be awesome, as would a band like Rolo Tomassi or Employed to Serve. As for opening, my friend’s starting up a grunge band called Bin Juice. They haven’t publicly released any music as of yet, but what I’ve been shown of it sounds fucking awesome so they’d be who I’d pick to open for us if given the choice.
