Band of the Day: Kinjiru

An act championed by many including Beermageddon’s Jim Beerman, Kinjiru has been making waves on the underground oceans for a while now. Find out a bit more about this solo project from the horse’s mouth…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Well, I should really point out that this is a solo project at the moment, so my origin story is very much the same as everyone else’s.  When a mummy and a daddy love each other very much… etc.

How did you meet?

I still don’t know if I have found myself yet!

How long have you been playing as a band?

The Kinjiru project sprang to life about May 2017 but the idea had been rattling around in my head for a while before then.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

I first came across the word ‘Kinjiru’ in James Clavell’s epic novel, Shogun.  I remember thinking at the time that it was a cool name for a band and kind of stored it away.

What are your influences?

Jack Daniel’s and adult tube sites.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Hmm.  I don’t know how unique the 4D EP is as different people seem to be able to draw different parallels to other acts that have combined metal and dance in the past.  I think the main differentiating factor is my twisted sense of humour which I hope comes through in places.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Yes, the subject matter centres around darker aspects of human desires such as unhealthy obsessions, illicit relationships and all the stuff that we all know goes on yet still don’t talk about.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Kinjiru hasn’t gone out live as yet but the stage will basically be a BDSM dungeon with all the band members in some sort of outfit that will be provocative in some way.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I once jumped from the stage into the middle of the pit and played real guitar with everybody playing air guitar, that was pretty cool. I try to get into the crowd as much as I can!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Okay, here goes; I’ve got two Jackson Dinkys, one Jackson Soloist and a Jackson Demmelition King V (the main guitar I used in Demons of Old Metal), I then also have a Charvel Desolation Star and a Charvel Predator from about 1989.  For studio use I have a Peavey Millenium bass and a Squier Dreadnought acoustic. Live, I use a Line 6 Spider 2 head and angled 4×12 with a Line 6 G10 digital wireless pack.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Well, even though it was released back on Halloween 2017, the PR is still rolling for the 4D EP which as had a truly wonderful response.

What are your plans for the rest of 2018?

At the moment I am writing, writing and then writing some more as it would be good to get enough tracks for a full-length release. I am also going to look at getting a live band together however finding venues that will be able to fit a seven piece band with a sex dungeon live show is going to be the real challenge!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I love Texas Hippie Coalition so if anybody can get them over here from the States, that would be great. I’d also love to be on a bill with Fire Red Empress because they’re absolutely outstanding.  I’d be happy anywhere on that bill – hell, I’d be happy being the merch guy if those two were on at the same time!

From previous Band of the Day Muscular Child: Dave Grohl, Mick Jagger, Prince – Who would you kiss, who would you marry and who would you kill?

I think it’s a bit late to do any of those things with Prince! I think Dave Grohl would get a manly sort of kiss of respect on the cheek but the most sensible way forward would be to marry Mick Jagger, take out a massive life insurance policy with me as the sole beneficiary then see that he had an unfortunate, erm, ‘accident.’

From another BotD, Vanity: If you could go back in time and tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

Do the trials – I was seriously quick at 100 and 200 metres and was offered the chance to do proper tryouts at County level but then I found out how early I’d have to get up to do the training and thought ‘f**k that!’ Besides, I’d already decided I was going to be a rock star!

And from Charly&Faust: What’s your underwear colour?

Underwear?
