Band of the Day: Dawn of 7th Sky

Diving deep into the pile of bands we cover, Band of the Day is always a great way to make your acquaintance with a new act. You get a flavour of their personality, what they’re like as a band and where they get their inspiration from. Plus they also get to answer some questions from Band of the Day alumni. With a handful of singles and an upcoming album, France’s Dawn of 7th Sky are next on the chopping block.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Hi, we all come from Aix-en-Provence, in France.

How did you meet?

Bambie and Bulle met at school, where they started playing music together. Mido and Marika also met at school, but they started a project on the side years after. One day Bambie went to the music shop where Mido was working at that time, and as he played the drums, Mido went to ask him if he would be interested in constructing something together. Bambie introduced Bulle to him and that’s how the 3 of them met. Marika came later on, as the first band of Bambie, Bulle and Mido ended.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Bambie, Bulle and Mido used to play in another band before, and 1 months after it ended, Mido called back Bambie and Bulle to form DO7S, starting from zero; new songs and new sound. So 4 years together, and 2 years as DO7S.

Where does the band name comes from?

Dawn of 7th Sky, it’s our hope of being someday relieved, getting out from sadness. This band represents the way to it. There’s always someone that understands you and your distress, it’s the soul of the band, to express it to everyone. When they come to a concert, the public should absorb the energy of our sound.

What are your influences?

Beyonce Knowles, Within Temptation, Enter Shikari, Architects, The Eyes of a Traitor, Knocked Loose, X-Japan, Jiluka, Girugamesh. We have all been raised with those worlds!

What makes you unique?

We all have extremely different influences; Marika is R’n’B, Bulle hardcore and deathcore, Bambie metalcore, and Mido visual-kei. And what makes our music unique it’s that we get to mix all this in our songs!

Any particular lyrical themes?

Our lyrics mainly deals with the feeling of despair, how to live and go forward despite it.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We have a strong experience of the scene but with our former band. With DO7S, shows and tours are coming this year and in 2019, as we prefer concentrating on other aspects of the band before, learning from our past mistakes.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

  • Bulle plays an Ibanez SR605, he says he can’t play anything else!
  • Mido has an LTD EC1000, and a stack EVH5150, because they just came in the way and he kept them.
  • Bambie has a Mapex, an iron cobra double bass drum pedal, and his cymbals are from various brands. However his favored is his china Zildjian 19!
  • Marika has prodipe in-ears and a ‘Blue’ mic, that were offered to her.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We are promoting our video clip; “Cut You Out” and our three singles. Actually we have been broadcast on German radio and had some reviews in magazines from Germany, Norway and other northern countries.

What are your plans for 2018?

2018 will be focused on shows and tours! We are in contact with various bookers to perform in France but also abroad. A new single is coming out soon: Fjord, and also the full album: My Heart Draws No More.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We would love our friends Cleaver of the Mist to open for us, and to support the awesome band Shoot the Girl First! (the guitarists made our video clip for “Cut You Out”).

From previous Band of the Day, Vanity: if you could go back in time and tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

Concentrate on what animates you!

From previous Band of the Day, Zebedy: if you had to replace your front person, but you could only pick from superheroes, who would it be and why?

It would be Jane Storm, the invisible woman, cause no one can replace Marika!

From previous Band of the Day, Crevassian: what is the strongest opening three tracks of any LP by any band you admire, and why?

  • Enter Shikari – “System… / …Meltdown”, for the way it goes from soft to hard
  • Knocked Loose – “Oblivions Peak”, because it’s so loud!
  • Girugamesh – “Go Ahead”, this track mixes all the music styles we love.
