Band of the Day: Halflives

About to undertake a swathe of European dates with Courage My Love, and with their own headlining UK tour coming up in July Halflives are very much the busy bunnies right now. Check out the dates below, around the band’s answers to our Band of the Day questions…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Modena, Italy. We have good food.

How did you meet?

For sure not by accident! It all started by my (Linda) will to make a band. It took some time to find the right members, but here we are!

How long have you been playing as a band?

We’ve been playing together for five years so we know each other quite well and this helps a lot in phases like rehearsing, touring etc. It’s quite automatic, we don’t lose so much time, we’re all used to it.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

During the days we were thinking of the band name, an old conversation came up to my mind. This conversation was about love and I was told “life is half without love” and it’s how the name “Halflives” clicked in my mind. Because indeed, without love we live half lives.

What are your influences?

We’re inspired by life and its ups and downs ; travels, heartbreaks, the passing of time, are the things that affect us most.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We’re crafting our sound in the modern wave of alternative rock, with elements from pop music (I’m a Katy Perry fan, oops sorry not sorry!), electronic music, and adding catchy choruses to it. Our purpose is to make our music accessible to everybody and not only people who usually like this genre specifically.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

As mentioned before, the things that affect us most are things that happen in the everyday life. Our lyrics deal with deep and often sad topics, and how to go through these moments in life.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Since we’ve been playing together for five years, many! As Halflives, though, we have something like thirty shows scheduled over the first semester of 2017. Our live show’s points is to give the maximum energy possible to the audience. We love having people singing and jumping at the show so we aim to convey all the energy and all the passion that is in our music.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Once Enrico (rhythm guitar player) and I (Linda) switched roles. He sang a whole song by screaming only and I played his guitar parts!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

We love Fender and Kemper.

What are your plans for 2017?

With our album Empty Rooms just released, we’re focusing on promotion right now. We’re leaving on a 2-week tour with our friends Courage My Love at the end of the week. The tour will stop at Camden Rocks Festival, which we’re super excited about!

After this tour we’ll be back in the UK in July for a headliner run. We have more shows to be announced for the summer so stay tuned!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’d love to support 30 Seconds to Mars (who wouldn’t!). As for supporting us, I recently came across Involvers from Finland on YouTube and I like their sound a lot, would be cool having them play with us someday!

Courtesy of previous Band of the Day act Love Zombies: Would you rather have a massive hit which made you rich stars and not needing to tour again unless you had to, or just get by comfortably with a small but loyal fanbase without much fame?

If I could write music and tour from time to time taking my time, I would be fine with that. It’s not about money, but rather about having the privilege to decide when to tour, the conditions of touring… For sure, it would be a bit less tiring.

Thank you for your time and we hope to see you guys soon at a show! :)
