Band of the Day: Morijah

When Swiss deathcore/deathmetal band Morijah dropped us a line, we had a quick listen to what they had to offer and decided we had to let you lot know about them as well. A quick email exchange later, and bassist Simon provided us with some more details about them. Read on, and check out their song “Day Of Trouble” below.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Dürrenäsch, a really small town in the north of Switzerland.

How did you meet?

The singer and the drummer were childhood friends, and the rest of us occasionally met each other and so we found out that we were all passionate about music. The rest is history. Funfact: two former members were found through the internet.

How long have you been playing as a band?

The guitarist began to look for suitable band members in 2014. Unfortunately we had a few lineup changes. The bass player joined the band at the end of 2015 as the last member.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Morijah is the mountain, today rather a hill, in Jerusalem. It is the mountain where the Jewish temple used to be. There is a ton of mystical stories about this place, it is even referred to as the centre of the earth. This just sounds really fascinating and epic to us.

What are your influences?

This is quite a difficult question to ask, since we don’t have something like a role-model band. We just implement everything we like about music. This means we try to cross the lines of different genres. We just don’t know who else sounds like us; if you know a band which does please tell us!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

In our songs we try to combine true metal and core elements. We love breakdowns and the transfer to soft parts makes them – in our opinion at least – feel more brutal. We also like to experiment a lot and mix new stuff into it, like some rather special synth sounds or Hebrew lyrics.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Religious themes appear often. But we think everyone can understand our music. We don’t want our music to be put in a box, so although we are all Christian believers, we don’t want to be called a “Christian” band. All in all we would say our lyrics are mostly criticizing and melancholic.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

To be honest we haven’t played a lot of live shows yet. Our first live show, which was on a band contest is available on youtube. We think we have improved a lot since then and with our own sound engineer, our singer now also hears the guitarist on stage!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

For one of our heaviest breakdowns our [former] keyboarder ran to the drum kit and supported the drummer by hitting another crash along with him.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Our drummer uses a Sonor drum kit and our guitarist loves his Schecter seven string guitar. The bassist is contented with his Warwick Rockbass – but you know, it’s the bassist…

What are your plans for 2017?

We want to play a lot of live shows and promote our album. We’re considering planning a small tour in November.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

As a supporting act we would choose our friends Weekend Warrior, they just know how to rock the stage. And we would love to support Thy Art Is Murder or another major deathcore act; we aren’t picky at all.

Black Despair was made available on February 11th from the band direct (gigs, etc.). It will be available via their website from March 1st and across various streaming platforms from April 7th.
