Self proclaimed “grunge, noise, shouty punk-mess from the midlands” Deny all Robots are right up my street! With an ever evolving underground punk rock scene in the midlands, and witnessing this band perform several explosive sets I was keen for a chat. Not long out of the studio recording their second E.P and a support slot with The Hyena Kill imminent, Dan Roberts ( guitar, vocals ), Glen Ogden ( bass man, backing vocals ) and Dave Anderson ( drummer ) shared their thoughts.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Dave Michigan, Lichfield
Dan Lichfield via Michigan
How did you meet?
Glen Dan and I met in a previous band, advertised for a drummer and Dave came along.
Dan At a cocktail party for middle aged has-beens.
How long have you been playing as a band?
Dave About a year now.
Before you get sick of being asked…..where does the band name come from?
Dan We intensely dislike robots.
Glen It’s a play on Dan’s name….. Daniel roberts.
What are your influences?
Dave Me? Loads, Ramones, QOTSA, House of Freaks, Pixies, Muse, Placebo
Glen Nirvana, Fugazi, Mudhoney, Metz, Blacklisters, God Damn, Youth Man
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Glen Punk, grunge, noisy, shouty and a tad sloppy.
Dave Harsh pounding noise that you will love, or leave.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Dan A collection of overheard conversations, TV dialogue and rubbish. Except “Crash” which is specifically about Darby Crash. The art is making everything fit.
What’s your live show like?
Glen Noisy, shouty, dirty guitars.
Dave Entertaining I hope. I think people aren’t always sure of us at first then stick around to see the rest.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Dave Kept getting electric shocks at an outdoor gig in the rain once.
Glen Ran off stage to scream at someone who knocked the PA stand with my headstock……not invited back
What kit do you use/ guitars do you play etc?
Dave Ringo setup, Pearl drums, Zildjian cymbals, or whatever’s there on the night!
Glen Fender Jazz bass, Tc electronic amp head and bass cab. EHX overdrive, Big Muff and other noise pedals.
Dan Squier Telecaster, Squier Jazzmaster, Peavey valveking amp. Proco Rat, Boss feedback and booster pedal, Boss delay and various other pedals to make a racket.
What are your plans for the rest of 2016?
Dan Sell some E.P’s and get a video done with the collective skills of an accountant, a council officer, an electrician, a nurse and some cardboard.
Glen Release newly recorded E.P and continue playing decent gigs around the midlands as much as possible.
If you were on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
Dave Third Angle Projection and Girl Band
Anything to add?
Dan Our generation has gone, we are not part of a trend, we know our limitations and we do this purely for release.
