2017 Crew Review – MarkW, Writer/Reviewer

A short but sweet year-end round-up from MarkW.

Best New Album:

Best New Band I Discovered:

Four stand out for me.  Brooklyn’s Ho99o9’s debut record United States of Horror is different and that’s sometimes what I need. Also Thunder on the Left, hearing them while covering the Loud Women festival grabbed me. The other continues my Seattle love, Devils Hunt Me Down and The LaFontaines really caught my attention.

Best Live Show:

Purely for nostalgia was Guns N’ Roses at The Olympic Stadium. Slash’s guitar solo of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” was beautiful, the show was superb. Prophets of Rage and their tribute to Chris Cornell. The entire audience sang his name, clapped, cheered and sung the lyrics to “Like A Stone”. Witnessing Bat out of Hell the musical was extreme, and we were invited to see it. Camden Rocks Festival is a pure joy, so many bands to see and find.

Best Thing That Happened:

In two weeks I saw Guns N’ Roses, Eddie Vedder and Prophets of Rage live – my inner child cried.

Worst Thing That Happened:

Chris Cornell. That’s all I can say.

Best Interview I Did This Year:

Tough one – I interviewed many while covering the 2017 London Tattoo Convention. Tattooists Jason Butcher and Stewart Robson, pin-up goddess Louise Rio Wild, Fuel Girl Kayla Cardona, tattooist and cosplayer Anna Quinn and artist Christopher Lovell. Matthew Gregg of Botchamania was very interesting and I enjoyed that one.

Overall View Of The Year:

An experience. Could’ve been better and could’ve been a hell of lot worse.

Most Looking Forward To In 2018:

Hearing something brand spanking new that makes a little bit of wee trickle out and for some reason enable this new pro wrestling addiction I seem to have, brother.
