Each day in the run-up to the finals, we’re doing two tracks from the 2015 Eurovision Song Competition and tearing them to shreds analysing them carefully in a bid to predict the winner on May 23rd.
ICELAND: María Olafs – “Unbroken”
MOSH: Olafs is channelling Avril Lavigne with this one, and she’s barely out of school so I shouldn’t be too harsh on her. Shows promise, it really does, but she needs to get away from the Euro-pap setting (I’m picturing swooshing diaphonous dresses), strap on a guitar and bang some rock in there. 3/5
DAVE: And another ballad – this is seriously sucking my will to live now. At least this girl varies her range a bit, making it a bit more listenable than the earlier songs. I don’t think Iceland want to win though. 2/5
ITALY: Il Volo – “Grande Amore”
MOSH: Sorry, I translate the title as “big love” and all I can think is that this must be a barely disguised attempt to sell Finnbar Saunders to the Italians. It’s the Italian effort so of course it ends up with a bunch of operatic tones. It also entirely fails to get above a plod. I’m sure if you speak the lingo it gets the red blood flowing as you imagine yourself running away from the Germans or something [if the Beeb haven’t replaced Clarkson yet, then I submit this as my CV] 2/5
DAVE: Before I press play, I’m calling it that “Il Volo” are a quartet of guys singing opera. Wahey, I’ve got all the points…you just knew it was going to happen. I like this…good mix of vocals, building nicely. These 4 guys can sing…..oh fuck it, there’s only 3 of them so dock me a point. 4/5
