Review: Goo Goo Dolls – Boxes

Goo Goo Dolls - BoxesThe Goo Goo Dolls are John Rzeznik (vocals and guitar), Robby Takac (vocals and bassist) and drummer George Tutuska.  They formed in Buffalo, New York in 1986. Since then they have been a steady influence on the ballad rock scene.  Most famous for their 1998 release “Iris” from City of Angels it is easy to forget all the amazing songs they have written and performed.  Many people currently don’t know another song by the Goo Goo Dolls other than “Iris” – this album will change that.

The album starts strong with “Over and Over”, something of a new sound for the band, a song with an addictive beat and a fantastic build up.  I see this song as a massive hit, it will play well on the radio and be great for a live gig!

“Flood” brings a female duet to the mix.  A surprising intro with a string instrumental, leading to a subtle female duet eventually building to a strong chorus. This addictive song is one to sing along to, a timeless ballad. Echosmith’s Sydney Sierota’s vocals perfectly harmonise with Rzeznik.

The album title track “Boxes” is a fantastic chilled ballad, great in the middle of the album, bringing you back to a slow melody.  A song to listen to as you drive in the sun with your love beside you.

“Prayer in my Pocket” brings you back to an upbeat track to tap your feet to and dance.  Finally “Long Way Home” bursts forth into a heart-warming tale of the distance we travel in a relationship emotionally and how we change and grow, how we fail and how we pick ourselves up.

If you enjoyed Trains’ most recent album and 30 seconds to Mars and know nothing of the Goo Goo Dolls other than “Iris” then listen to this album.  Listen to it in your car, the with top down, in the sun. Listen to it alone or next to the one you love. I can guarantee that you will listen to it on repeat.

Boxes was released yesterday (6th May) digitally with a vinyl version due on June 10th
