For those who have yet to discover Darkend they are a band whose influences lie above and beyond the generic black metal scene. They incorporate a range of musical styles from ceremonial chants to symphonic music elements, combined with black metal patterns, making this band an interesting yet catchy band to get into. However what I find amazing about Darkend and this album in particular is the name they have acquired for themselves with tours with Samael and Melechesh, and with guest appearances of Niklas Kvarforth (Shining), Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Sakis Tolis (Rotting Christ) and Labes C.N (Abysmal Grief).
One track for me that stands out on this album is entitled “Clavicula Salmonis” which has the kick-start of symphonic sounds and a piano which creates a beautiful yet chilling introductory melody to the track. Later on in the track when the battery enters, the track becomes heavier, darker and more powerful which is added to with the addition of the raw screeching vocals. The song is also complete with a mixture of tempos and melodies that adds more energy to a vibrant and magnificent start to the album.
Another track, “On the Defunct” is noteworthy. Ceremonial chants start this track off which goes perfectly when the drums and guitars. When the vocals kick in, the dark growls mix with more high pitched-screeching and again work beautifully with the battery. The track is also complete with more use of symphonies which add power to an already catchy, heavy and dark track. There is also the presence of wild guitar solos and catchy breakdowns which add power and volume to a track that keeps on giving.
Later on in the album a track entitled “Sealed in Black Moon and Saturn” comes into play where dark symphonies open up the track. Soon these are followed by the battery including heavy guitars and thunderous drums. The vocals then start which are dark and raw and add power. Later on the use of melodic breakdowns and clear-singing vocals add a dark yet harmonious atmosphere, to a track that does not cease to impress.
An incredibly well-written album that has so much to offer and what can only be described as a magnificent piece of art by the Italian band.
