100 Word Review: Vivid Remorse – Down to the Wire

Vivid Remorse - Down to the WireFormed in 2006 in Barcelona (Spain), Vivid Remorse is an unconventional band. Based on a mixture of both classic and modern thrash with some groove, speed metal, crossover, hardcore and death metal influences, the result is a very distinctive and unique style and a particular sound, which combines the classic and the melody of bands such Metallica or Death Angel with the modernity of Machine Head and Pantera and the speed of Slayer and Sepultura, all mixed with huge personality. A thrash with no prejudices, no doubt about it.

Vivid Remorse released their first album in 2009, an EP called Welcome to my Stormy Nights, with great success in the Barcelona’s metal underground area. In 2010 the band released his first LP, entitled The Seed of Malaise. Recorded at well-known Spanish recording studios Axtudio on July 2010, the album consists of 13 short tracks, diverse, powerful and dynamic, with original riffs and aggressive but melodic voices. In this album Vivid Remorse show everybody why they’re considered one of the most original and promising metal bands in Spain, developing their own and particular style and particular style, a thrash without prejudices. The LP got great reviews, and some media considered it as the “best Spanish thrash album of 2010”

On April 2012 the band signed a deal with Art gates label for the next album, recorded on July also in Axtudio. With this new album, released in October 2012 the band goes one step beyond, but preserving a unique sound and keeping the image of likely the most original thrash band within the Spanish metal scene.

This is the album reviewed here – almost two years old, but they’re still publicising and touring on it.

Down the Wire is unrelenting, fast and more speed/thrash than anything else. How they can play an hour-long set based on the album and not collapse is beyond me. Chords ring out non-stop, lyrics are spat like machine gun bullets and the drums are battered at speeds that make you wonder why they don’t just surrender.

Vivid Remorse take the listener back to the no-frill days when substance mattered more than style. While there aren’t many original twists, what is there is a great example of classic thrash/speed.
