Single Reviews

EPs and Singles a-go-go here. A section which can be busy so check fairly often. Reviews will be wiped once the record's been out for about a month. Well, it's a bugger getting hold of old singles anyway.

The marks scale is as follows:
1/5 You mean people might pay for this crap?!
2/5 If there was no other music on the planet, I might listen to this
3/5 Turn that down! It might annoy grandpa!
4/5 Turn that up! It might annoy grandpa!
5/5 Does this thing go up to eleven!? WOW!

Single: New
Artist: No Doubt
Label: Sony
Description: Light soundtrack track
Available: Soon

Fairly standard fare from No Doubt, released as the first track from the soundtrack from the upcoming film Go. No idea who else is on the soundtrack, but judging by the pictures of the film I'd guess at fairly "teen-friendly" acts.

Single: Rumble(d)
Artist: The Yo-Yo's
Label: Rebound
Description: Ploddy yet bouncy rock
Available: May 31st

If I had to think of a combination of bands that would sum up The Yo-Yo's it'd be Aerosmith, AC/DC, Faster Pussycat and The Wildhearts. There's that classic rock sound in there, yet a sleazy touch with a rough edge. Pretty good stuff and (I'd guess) guaranteed crowd-pleasing material. As such, they're touring in June to support this single - check 'em out if they're near you.

Single: Standing With The Gun
Artist: Lukan
Label: Depth Records
Description: Light rock
Available: Now

New band to me, this one. They've recently completed one tour and will be on the road again with Thunder during May/June. Not too bad for a first listen - fairly up-tempo and noisy. Not a hugely original sound, but certainly not one to be dismissed as overly formulaic.
There are three tracks on the CD (2 on the vinyl version) - the title track, Always Alone (CD only) and Tomorrow. My advice is, unless you're stuck with only a record player, get the CD version - Always Alone's a belter!

Single: Supergod
Artist: Cyclefly
Label: Radioactive Records
Description: Rock
Available: Now

Saw this band live supporting Pulkas recently and they're all mad. The music that goes with the madness isn't that good, though. Not bad just not that great. Cyclefly sound like Suede on acid with a bit of The Cranberries mixed in. Yeah, that weird. I guess the songs are just a little too punky for me, but they weren't that unpopular at the gig so if you liked the act, consider picking up the single.

Single: I Wanna Be Your Doll
Artist: Rachel Stamp
Label: Snapper
Description: Rock
Available: Now

Back to the makeup days with Rachel Stamp. The vocals sound very female, but bearing in mind that the singer's called David, that's not likely. Good stuff, though the guitars are a little overemphasised and cheesy. The two B-sides aren't bad either. Give it a listen, strange though it is. They certainly show potential, but they're not that great yet.

Single: Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)
Artist: Various
Label: Columbia
Description: Rock remake
Available: Now

This track is taken from the soundtrack to the new movie (well, it is in the UK) The Faculty. This track features members of Alice in Chains, Rage Against The Machine and Jane's Addiction. It is, of course, a cover of the classic Pink Floyd song. The album it comes from features many other covers of well-known songs including Soul Asylum doing School's Out and Creed's version of I'm Eighteen. The A-side here is good, being a new version rather than just a re-recording of the original. Good stuff.

Single: Lit Up
Artist: Buckcherry
Label: Dreamworks
Description: Light Rock
Available: Now

The album this single is from should be in the shops by now. If it's as good as this right through, then buy it. It's a great light rock selection, in the Skid Row sort of vein. Even the two B-sides (Check Your Head and For The Movies) are great tracks, too. Good beat, good lyrics, catchy... Everything a single should be. Hey, for the sake of a couple of quid, check it out.
